What to do with scrap material that has been donated?

  • I'm a lucky recipient of much scrap material. Very much a variety. And there's more where it came from.

Anyone have some ideas of what we can do with this for toddlers and preschoolers. Of course sewing and "craft" projects are really out of the question. One project we have done is using pink and purple scraps to glue to the letter P. And this winter we'll be making patchwork mittens. Any other ideas? Thanks!

  • cut out clothing shapes and then let the children decorate the "clothing" with colorful bits of fabric. Plastic Christmas ornaments can be decorated with fabric and rickrack. You can use large pieces to decorate a bulletin board (as background) You can make simple aprons to be used for painting and crafting to protect clothing. Put buttons and buttonholes on fabric for practice. Zippers that unzip all the way (like jacket type) snaps are good for small motor skills. Have fun there are more things to do then you have fabric. Oh! one more thing, if you don't have the time to put on zippers or buttons, try involving a senior citizen you know. Many would be happy to do these things and may even have other ideas as well!

  • We glue squares of different fabrics on construction paper on Q day for quilts.
We also cut out little dresses and pants to hang on a clothesline on C day.
Plus we have done the fabric mittens for the three little kittens.
Lucky you to have donations - don't let them go to waste!

  • I have a class of two year olds and i use scrap material all the time for art and sensory projects. We glue it on to everything-shiny fabric on fish shapes, brown fabric on a bear shape (teddy bear), tent shapes-basically anything that the color or texture of the material would enhance the project a little bit. You could also make a matching hat or scarf with your mittens. I like the use random fabric with projects because it's something different than just construction paper.

I also cut different colors and textures into very small pieces and put them in a dry, empty soda bottle for the kids to shake and check out the different colors. Just glue the lid so it will stay on.

We have also made a class quilt-just cut a variety of fabric into small squares, give each child a larger square to glue the fabric how ever they want, then put all the large squares together. I hole punched the larger squares then tied them all together-it was cute and the kids liked to touch it and feel the different textures.

  • For the older children have them glue the green material to egg cartons to make caterpillars, tie it in by reading the story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Let the younger children just touch and feel the material, especially if you have different types like felt and silk.

  • use things to count, learn colors, make the alphabet, etc. use string to learn how to tie shoes or things like that.

  • Here is one. I remember a teacher helping me with a project similar to this one when I was little.
have the children glue different colored scraps onto a picture frame. This can be a plastic, cardboard, or wooden frame, but I would suggest cardboard, You can use old cereal boxes that way. (mine was made of cardboard, I still have it. ) Here are basic directions
    Items Needed:
Glue, Scraps, cereal boxes, paper, crayons or magazine pictures
    Directions:
    1. Tear or cut the cereal boxes, so you just have the front and back of each box.
2.Have the children each choose a piece of the cardboard.
3.Have the children color a piece of paper or glue magazine pictures to the paper.
    4. Glue the paper/pictures to the center of the cardboard.
    5. Decorate the boarder of the picture by gluing scraps of material all around the picture.
They will have great fun taking this project they've worked hard on home to mom! The will also enjoy feeling the material, and admiring their chosen/created artwork. This is great for kid's fine motor development, and if you let them help tear the cardboard they will get to use some large motor skills!
