Help! I have to wade thigh-deep in water when its 35 F outside, what could I wear?

  • We wade into the water to put our boats in for morning rowing practice (we don't put in from the docks like most teams). Sometimes the water comes up to my knees, sometimes it comes all the way up to my waist. Then we get to climb into the boat and row for an hour! It was fine in october but I'm not looking forward to March. I can keep warm when its 35 degrees outside but not when I'm soaking wet. Any suggestions?

  • You could go buy a pair of waders. They are at the most for a decent pair probably 60 - 70 dollars but they would keep you dry and warm at the same time and you can get just waist ones for i beleive 40 dollars so it would be worth it to stay dry.

  • You could try neoprene pants, basically the lower half of a wetsuit: http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product_list....

Also dry pants with socks. They're constructed kind of like waders, but the material (Gore-Tex or similar) is very thin and flexible. See http://www.palmequipmentusa.com/acatalog...

  • If you climb in right after you launch, you sure can't row in waders. I guess the other guys never rowed crew. I suggest a decent, thin, (3/2 or less) wetsuit. Preferably a long john, it has long legs, but no sleeves, so you won't be too overheated while rowing. And you'll want a pair of 5 to 7 mil wetsuit booties, that should be fine to wear while rowing.

  • find some neoprene socks and a short style wet suit you should be fine but look out for signs of hypothermia

  • You'll want some thermal waders. Get the sort made from neoprene; they're a little heavier than the lightweight models, but they are a lot warmer. You'll want a pair with boots built in, so you don't have to worry about wading shoes. Either get a pair of waist-length ones, or go the full mile and get chest waders. The waist-lengths will be more useful, and also easier to store in the boat. Cabela's, www.cabelas.com, do good ones.
